Exploration of Students Eligible for but Not Receiving CalFresh
Overview
This page provides a brief description of characteristics of 836 students that were determined to be likely eligible for CalFresh but not currently using it at the time of the survey. See the CalFresh Food Eligibility page for eligibility criteria and related survey question text. All participating college students were either in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at the UC or CSU systems or in the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) in the CCC systems.
Of the 1341 students who were likely eligible for CalFresh, 1289 responded to a survey question inquiring about their knowledge/use of CalFresh benefits and 836 (64.9%) did not report currently using CalFresh as a college student. 55 of the 1341 students who were likely eligible for CalFresh either did not finish the survey or selected “Prefer not to answer” for this question.
Proportion of students likely eligible but not receiving CalFresh by campus
The participation distribution for these 836 likely eligible but not receiving students is the same as the overall distribution of all participating students from each of the 12 campuses. The only exceptions are Clovis Community College and Butte College. See College Campus for the distribution of all participating students.
Summary: Across participating CSU campuses 75% (528/706) of likely CalFresh eligible college students reported not currently using CalFresh. These numbers were 51% (241/469) and 59% (67/114) for CCC an UC campuses, respectively.

Mean ages differed between campus types, where the mean age among CSU students was 23.9, compared to 28.7 among CCC students, and 21.1 among UC students.
